What is a Nature School?
Why nature?
Why Us?
In downtown Columbia, a pressing need for innovative early childhood education approaches has spurred a new movement. Originating in Europe and spreading through the Pacific Northwest and New England, Nature Preschools and Forest Kindergartens are gaining traction across the US.
This shift is driven by various factors, including the adverse effects of excessive screen time and technology on children's development. With today's youngsters increasingly tethered to electronic devices, opportunities for outdoor exploration and play are dwindling. This trend has alarming consequences, ranging from physical health issues to a disconnect from the natural world and diminished mental well-being. These challenges aren't confined to adults and older children; they often manifest in early childhood.
In response, the Nature Preschool & Forest Kindergarten movement aims to address the "indoor-ification" of early childhood. This phenomenon, characterized by an emphasis on excessive screen time, and a lack of new challenges, has led to growing concerns among parents and advocates.
Nature Schools offer a compelling alternative, providing opportunities for outdoor experiences, unstructured play, and holistic development that are increasingly sought after in downtown Columbia.
